Valheim Boss and Biome Progression Order: Meadows to Deep North

Valheim 1.0Updated 6 min readValheimbossesprogression

Updated September 12, 2026. This route is a suggested order for a standard survival playthrough; you can explore regions out of order.

Our recommended biome route is Meadows → Black Forest → Swamp → Mountains → Plains → Mistlands → Ashlands → Deep North. Work on repeatable preparation in each region, then its boss, before treating the next region as your main destination.

This page reveals biome names. Boss names are in the expandable section below; our interactive progress checklist also hides them by default.

The early progression is tied to what bosses provide. Iron Gate uses the Meadows boss's antler, the Black Forest boss's crypt key, and the Mistlands boss's drop as examples of preparation for the following biome. It specifically recommends completing the Mistlands boss before Ashlands.

This table summarizes the concrete objectives explained below. Read the matching section when a recipe, material, or environmental hazard is blocking progress.

Meadows: camp first, pickaxe next

Build a sheltered workbench you can use, claim a bed, and arrange a fire with a route for smoke to escape. Fill three different food slots and gain Rested before a longer outing. The getting-started guide walks through those checks and their requirements.

Your first boss provides the hard antler for the Antler pickaxe. That is the normal entry into mining, rather than something you need to find in a chest.

Our recommendation: spend the next session locating a copper deposit and a Burial Chamber, not wandering into every biome visible from the shore.

Black Forest: turn ores into bronze

Mine copper deposits inland and tin deposits near water. Search Burial Chambers for Surtling cores; a Smelter and Charcoal kiln each need five. The kiln supplies coal for smelting the ores. At a Forge, two copper plus one tin produces one bronze.

Our first bronze-tool recommendation is the Bronze axe: it opens finewood gathering from birch and oak. Keep the next goal specific—a tool, a station, or a weapon—because a full set of upgrades can consume several mining trips.

Swamp: key, iron, and poison protection

Take the Black Forest boss's Swamp key to a Sunken Crypt. The key is reusable. Mine the muddy scrap piles inside for scrap iron; the crypts also contain Withered bones associated with this biome's boss progression.

Prepare Poison resistance mead before exposure. The current crafting chain is Mead Ketill for the base, then Fermenter for the drink. Drinking after poison has already been applied does not reduce that existing poison effect.

Our recommendation is to reserve iron for the mining upgrade you will need next instead of spending the entire first haul on armor.

Plan the iron's journey home before filling the outpost chest. A wooden portal helps with return visits for supplies, but normal settings block scrap iron and smelted iron alike. The portal guide includes a worked Swamp trip that separates building a return route from hauling the cargo.

Mountains: equip the detector and the right pickaxe

The Swamp boss's Wishbone helps locate buried silver. You need an Iron pickaxe or better to mine the vein. Before searching, protect against freezing with Frost resistance mead or suitable equipment such as a Wolf fur cape; Wolf armor legs alone do not provide that protection.

Our recommendation is to check the protection effect and pickaxe before climbing: finding silver is frustrating if you cannot mine it. After the Mountain boss, Dragon tears enable the Artisan table and its processing structures.

Plains: build processing before spending the harvest

Use the Artisan table to build the Blast furnace, Spinning wheel, and Windmill. These are the station milestones that make the biome's materials useful.

The practical chains are black metal scrap → Blast furnace → black metal, flax → Spinning wheel → linen thread, and barley → Windmill → barley flour.

Flax and barley crops must grow in the Plains, even if you can place them on cultivated ground elsewhere. Save some of the first harvest for replanting. Our recommendation is a protected farm before committing the whole supply to crafting or cooking.

Mistlands: visibility, cores, then refined eitr

Use the Plains boss's Torn spirit for a Wisp fountain, collect wisps when it is dark, then craft and equip a Wisplight using a wisp and silver.

Next, search Infested Mines for Black cores. They support the Black forge, Eitr refinery, and Galdr table; a mine can contain none, so one empty dungeon is not evidence that the material is unavailable.

The refinery processes sap and soft tissue into refined eitr. Sap gathering requires a Sap extractor, including a Dvergr extractor component. Keep the refinery away from vulnerable construction because its operation can damage nearby structures.

Ashlands: build the arrival kit before sailing

The Mistlands boss's Majestic carapace enables the Artisan press upgrade. That unlocks ceramic plates and shield cores—the preparation chain for your ship and protection.

Build a Drakkar for the boiling approach waters; earlier boats take damage there. Prepare a Shield generator and bone fuel for your foothold. Its dome protects against cinder rain and incoming projectiles; it does not remove the need to defend the camp from enemies.

For equipment progression, obtain flametal ore from veins or fortress chests and process it in a Blast furnace. Mining the veins requires a Black metal pickaxe or better.

Stone portals give this stage another useful transport objective. They allow normally restricted cargo when you enter the stone end, even if the destination uses wood. Check both directions before calling the route ready for metal: the portal types and direction table explains the difference.

Deep North: start with a defined expedition

After the Ashlands stage, use the Deep North preparation guide for the world check, first landing plan, and new crafting facilities. Keep the initial objective small enough to return with materials and a clear next requirement.

In the progress checklist, biome preparation and boss completion remain separate. Tick preparation when your relevant supply and crafting setup works; record the boss only when you have defeated it. Neither action changes your game save or achievements.

Return to the Valheim hub for the full starter series. If you are updating an older campaign, read saves, mods, and current achievement behavior before making changes to it.
