Valheim Deep North Preparation: Your First Expedition in 1.0

Valheim 1.0Published 5 min readValheimDeep Northexploration

Reviewed September 11, 2026. This guide gives preparation advice and avoids the final boss's name, summoning details, and story outcomes. Named tools and crafting facilities below are light equipment spoilers.

Make your first Deep North trip a scouting expedition with a return plan. Your first useful success can be learning the terrain and identifying the next crafting step. It does not have to be clearing every new location or finishing the biome in one session.

The Deep North is now part of the released Valheim 1.0 game. Check your installed version before planning around an older preview.

Check the world before packing the expedition

First, identify the world you intend to use and who owns its latest backup. If you are continuing an older campaign, check whether its northern destination was explored before the update. New content generation depends on unexplored areas.

Our recommendation is to settle this question with the group before distributing equipment and planning a long trip. A player who wants to begin again and a player who wants to continue an established settlement may both have sensible reasons. Agree on the campaign first.

Use our worlds, saves, and mods guide for the update checklist. If your campaign uses mods, test the compatible setup separately before committing the important save. Keep the identity of the active campaign clear so the group does not split its work across different copies.

Review your current progression honestly

Our recommended preparation point is a functioning Ashlands-stage campaign with its boss completed and its equipment and supply routines established. This is a readiness recommendation, not a claim that the game prevents you from travelling north earlier.

Use the boss and biome progression guide to locate any unfinished work. Ask what “ready” means for your group. If an ordinary supply trip still regularly ends in a difficult recovery, deal with that weakness before making the trip longer and less familiar.

Returning players should spend a short session practising with the loadout they intend to take. Relearn its controls and confirm the item descriptions. Check which supplies are actually available now; an old memory of a well-stocked base is not a current inventory.

Pack by purpose

Our recommendation is to organize supplies into jobs instead of filling every slot with something that might help. Keep a written list if several players are contributing.

JobPreparation question
CombatCan you use the chosen equipment comfortably, and is it in good condition?
ProvisionsAre the food and recovery supplies suitable for the outing you planned?
EnvironmentHave you checked the current protection descriptions on your equipment and consumables?
Establishing a footholdDo you have the supplies for the small staging point you intend to make?
RecoveryWhat remains at home if the carried loadout is lost?
DiscoveryIs there room to bring unfamiliar materials back?

Separate the primary loadout from the recovery kit. A backup that travels in the same inventory does not provide much help when you need to return from base. Put shared supplies where another player can find them without waiting for their owner.

Do not buy into a claim of a universal “best” launch loadout without understanding its purpose. Choose equipment around the problems you expect to solve, then revise the plan using what your own expedition reveals.

Treat new terrain as something to learn

The release introduces snow that must be cleared for building, frozen surfaces, and a grappling hook for traversing heights. It also adds new crafting facilities, including the Frigid Kiln and Frost Foundry.

Our recommendation is to choose a modest first objective: identify a usable staging area, observe the surroundings, and return with a clear plan for the next visit. Keep the first building project functional. Expanding immediately into a large settlement can distract from learning the region and its supply requirements.

Test movement and unfamiliar equipment in a situation where a mistake is recoverable. With friends, agree where you will regroup before taking different routes. Avoid using an entire party's supplies to investigate several unknowns simultaneously.

When you encounter a new material, keep enough information to recognize it again. Record where it came from, which recipe or facility seems relevant, and what prerequisite is still missing. That turns exploration into a useful next task rather than a collection of unexplained items.

Follow one crafting objective at a time

New recipes are easiest to understand when you work backward from an item you actually want to make. Read the current in-game requirements, identify the facility involved, and separate the missing materials from any missing station or upgrade.

Our recommended note format is simple: “Target item → required facility → missing requirement → next destination.” If a prerequisite leads to another prerequisite, record that instead of repeatedly gathering the material you already have.

Avoid committing all rare materials to the first upgrade you see. Compare the improvement with your current obstacle. If survival is the problem, a decorative building project can wait; if the group has no usable supply route, another weapon may not solve the bottleneck.

Plan the second trip before attempting the last fight

After returning, ask three questions: what stopped progress, what improved it, and what must change next time? Choose one practical improvement. Refill the supplies you used, repair the equipment you intend to keep, and leave the base ready for the next departure.

The September 11 all-platform hotfix specifically restores repairability for Deep North heavy armor; its Steam-only companion patch contains additional fixes. If repair behavior seems wrong, check that the relevant update is installed before treating it as a crafting requirement.

Use the Valheim progress checklist to record preparation separately from boss completion and keep notes for the next session. You decide when the biome feels prepared. Boss names stay hidden until you choose to reveal them, so the tool can support a first playthrough without exposing the final encounter.
