Early Access · updated September 12, 2026. Steam 1.0 is scheduled for October 15.
Open the recipe you want and check what is stopping it: a missing survivor, a workshop, a tool, or an ingredient. If the recipe is absent altogether, start with the survivor's quests and crafting menu. This saves a trip for materials that will still leave the item locked when you return.
Start with the Blacksmith, then follow your next need
Oswald Anders, the Blacksmith, is the opening craftsperson rescued through Find the Sleeping Survivor. His equipment serves melee characters and resource gathering; his workshop family includes the Charcoal Kiln, Forge, and Smelter.
After that introduction, use the journal's available objectives alongside the following priorities. This is our recommended way to choose between tasks, not a claim that every survivor can be rescued immediately in any order.
| What is holding you back? | Survivor to investigate | Useful next objective |
|---|---|---|
| Basic metalworking or gathering equipment | Blacksmith | Establish the production needed for the tool or armor you want |
| Spell supplies or alchemical materials | Alchemist | Recover his equipment and expand the recipes available at base |
| Ranger equipment or textile processing | Hunter | Inspect the required workshop in the recipe you are pursuing |
| Storage, construction, or movement equipment | Carpenter | Complete the relevant workshop or equipment quest |
| Repeatable meals and cultivated ingredients | Farmer | Establish a Seedbed and the cooking facilities your meals require |
Pick one desired result from the table and work toward it before adding several unrelated production chains.
If you already own the equipment and want to improve it with runes, visit the specialist for its class: Blacksmith for warrior equipment, Huntress for ranger equipment, and Alchemist for mage equipment. That upgrade action is separate from unlocking a recipe to make a replacement.
Rescue is the start of the setup
Rescued survivors can be placed at your base with the Summoning Staff. Their functions include specialist crafting and further progression opportunities.
Give a newly rescued craftsperson a practical place to work, then speak to them and inspect both their quests and recipes. Place the facilities needed for your next item where you can easily reach them. Keep a clear walking route between the survivor, storage, and production equipment.
Shelter is checked at the survivor's assigned bed. If that requirement stays blocked, follow the survivor shelter troubleshooting guide before rebuilding the workshop.
A concrete first workshop: the Forge
The Forge recipe lists 30 Stone, 10 Metal Scraps, 10 Charcoal, and 12 Wood Logs, crafted through the Blacksmith.
Treat that as a small production project:
- Count existing ingredients and reserve the required amounts.
- Look at the Charcoal production requirement before planning more exploration.
- Gather the missing physical materials in a manageable outing.
- Craft and place the Forge.
- Reopen the intended equipment recipe to identify the next requirement.
Charcoal is produced in the Charcoal Kiln from wood and dirt. The kiln step is easy to overlook when a shopping list jumps directly to metalworking.
The same approach scales to later crafting: write the final item at the top of your notes, then list its unfinished dependencies underneath. Work on the earliest missing dependency, not whichever ingredient happens to sound familiar.
The Alchemist and Carpenter connect several projects
The Alchemist supplies spells, potions, caster equipment, and reagents. His quests include recovering the Mortar and other crafting equipment.
For the Mortar, the quest leads to the Alchemist's tower at Lone Thistle and its underground laboratory. The objective continues through opening the laboratory and returning the Mortar to your base. Read the active quest step after finding it; possessing equipment and completing its placement objective are separate steps.
The Carpenter's work includes storage, improved traversal equipment, and construction supplies. His Table Saw and Kiln support further recipes.
For a building-focused session, our recommended target is a usable storage system before a large decorative project. For exploration, compare the equipment you need with the material processing you have already unlocked. See Magic Chests and Quick Stack for one practical base project.
Recipe missing, or recipe visible but blocked?
If you cannot find the recipe, revisit the relevant survivor and their available quests. For returning players, check the Farmer's and Carpenter's newer stations: Update 8 moved recipes into additional crafting facilities. Resource descriptions also provide acquisition hints, and the journal's Bases menu shows factory progress.
If the recipe is visible, read each blocked requirement separately. A tool named beside a recipe is not another stack of raw materials. Finish the quest or crafting step for that tool, place the required equipment, then inspect the original recipe again. For the Mortar example above, follow the active objective all the way back to the base instead of stopping after collecting it.
Before exploring, make a short note with three parts: the item you want, the requirement blocking it, and the next action that clears that requirement. “Need better storage” is hard to finish; “return the Mortar, then check the ingredient I need” gives the session a clear end point.
The factory has ingredients, but nothing is being made
Open the production menu and check the selected recipe and each input it needs. For factories using water, inspect the factory's own water supply. These stations can receive water through the supported water tools, nearby wells, or filled pouches; an empty supply can leave a recipe waiting. Some later factories also require force, supplied by a water wheel or windmill. Follow the requirement shown by your station rather than adding power equipment to every workshop.
As a quick diagnosis, watch whether a small batch starts after you fix the missing input. Once it does, let that batch finish before queuing a large amount. If materials are present in storage but unavailable where you are crafting, check the Magic Chest setup. If interaction is denied in multiplayer, use the co-op permission checks.
Choose the unlock that gets you moving again
- A tool or armor recipe is blocked: finish its named workshop or survivor objective.
- A Flame upgrade lists a survivor requirement: prioritize the rescue rather than more material gathering; see the Flame Altar progression guide.
- Your workshop works, but trips end too early: improve one dependable meal supply or review your Shroud route.
- The immediate problem is solved: try the new equipment on your intended outing before starting the next production chain.
Once a chain works, make a second batch of the supplies you actually use rather than immediately expanding every station. Continue with gear and rune upgrades or food and farming. Record the next missing dependency in the adventure planner, and browse the complete series in the Enshrouded hub.
